- Junipero Serra High School in Gardena, CA was one of nine schools in the United States to participate in the International Space Station Program (ISSP).
- Many students initially involved in the project were members of the school’s National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) chapter.
- The students spent long hours working on the project in addition to their heavy high school workload.
- The team of students from the school designed, engineered, and programmed the original experiment “Automated Germination of Wisconsin Fast Plants in Microgravity.”
- The experiment studies the automated germination of Wisconsin Fast Plants, a cultivar of Brassica rapa, in space.
- Astronauts on the ISS monitored the experiment for the month of August, and complete data processing and result generation will occur after the astronauts return.
