Single Background
Young Mark Watney (named after the protagonist of The Martian) is a song written and performed by Kai Rasmussen. The song was produced by Calvin Kostmatka, who sampled laboratory equipment in the Gilroy Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The sound heard at the beginning is a centrifuge spinning up. The song was submitted for the ASGSR 2016 art contest but was rejected due to it not being “art” or at least the type of art that ASGSR was asking for (photography, drawings, etc.). Despite this, thanks to Dr. Sarah Swanson of the Gilroy Lab, ‘Young Mark Watney’ was played for ASGSR attendees at the ASGSR closing ceremony in the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame.
Fun Fact: Young Mark Watney was created 5 months prior to the creation of astrobotany.com.
